The Humane Society of the United States released an undercover investigation in December 2012 of pet stores in the Chicago area, linking many of them to inhumane commercial breeders known as puppy mills. The investigation revealed that while store employees gave strong assurances to the contrary, when HSUS staff visited their suppliers and examined paper trails, it was revealed that the stores are buying from puppy mills and large commercial brokers supplied by puppy mills.

The holiday season is the busiest puppy-buying season of the year, and thousands of dogs are suffering in puppy mills year-round. Mother dogs do not get to care for their puppies, since they are taken away at just eight weeks old. When they can't breed, the mother dogs are discarded or killed — all to supply the pet industry with an endless stream of puppies to sell to unsuspecting consumers.

You can help this holiday season by choosing not to buy your next pet or any pet supplies from retail stores or Internet sites that sell puppies or kittens. Always consider adoption from a local shelter first, or buy only from a small, responsible breeder you have met in person.
