Say no to shark finning

Shark finning is a cruel practice. Sharks are tossed back into the ocean after having their fins removed. Rendered immobile, these sharks are susceptible to shock, severe blood loss, starvation or predation by other fish. The lives of millions of sharks are at risk due to the high demand for their fins, which are used in soup.

The Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (H.R. 1456) and the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act of 2017 (S. 793) will prohibit the import, export, possession, trade, and distribution of shark fins and products containing shark fins -- saving these animals from a devastating fate.

Sharks are essential for healthy ocean ecosystems and shark finning is a global epidemic, constituting one of the worst forms of human destruction of our oceans. Unsustainable fishing methods like these have caused a decline of as much as 90 percent among some shark populations in recent decades.

Please make a brief, polite phone call to your U.S. Representative and two U.S. Senators. Look up your legislator's phone number. You can simply say, "Please support H.R. 1456 and S. 793 to protect sharks from the cruel practice of shark finning."

Dear Legislators,

As your constituent, I am urging you to cosponsor and push for the passage of H.R. 1456 and S. 793, which will prohibit the import, export, possession, trade, and distribution of shark fins and products containing shark fins.

Shark finning inhumanely removes a shark's fins and discards the rest of the living animal back into the ocean to suffer shock, severe blood loss, or predation by other fish. This practice is driven by market demand and poses a major threat to entire ecosystems.

By passing this bill, the United States further asserts our leadership in global shark conservation, fortifies the current ban on shark finning activity in U.S. waters, and removes the U.S. from participating in the destructive shark fin trade.
