Dear Legislator,

California is a national leader in animal welfare, spearheading efforts to replace animal testing with humane and more human-relevant research methods. Now is the time to take a stand to end the practice of unnecessary toxicity testing on dogs and cats.

Dogs suffer terribly as they are fed quantities of the test substance on a routine basis for months and observed for harmful effects. Dogs can receive these substances in their food or via a pill and often requiring force-feeding. Some tests involve overdosing dogs, while others administer chemicals over a prolonged period of time, causing slow and horrific deaths.

California once again has the chance to lead the way by supporting the continued advancement of testing methods that are more affordable, more predictive of impacts on humans and clearly less harmful to animals.

Please pass SB 252. This legislation is specifically focused on toxicity testing using dogs and cats and does not impact testing for medical research or drugs required by federal statutes or regulations.
