Despite hearing from thousands who want to keep Missouri’s bears protected, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is still considering opening a trophy hunting season on their small and still-recovering population of black bears. A hunting season is simply unnecessary and cruel, as highly-sentient black bears play critical roles in their ecosystem and self-regulate their own populations. This proposal is not founded in sound science and simply caters to the small minority of people who want to go and kill a bear for a trophy and bragging rights. Even worse, MDC has no prohibition on the killing of unaccompanied cubs themselves, meaning that trophy hunters could target bear cubs who have been separated from their mothers, which is unspeakably cruel.
Contact the Missouri Department of Conservation Commission and demand that they reject a trophy hunting season on Missouri’s bears.
