Since 2003, the U.S. government -- often pandering to special interests -- has repeatedly tried to remove comprehensive Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves. In 2011, Congress directed the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to strip federal ESA protections from gray wolves in most of the Northern Rockies. And finally, last November, USFWS delisted gray wolves completely across the lower 48 states. As a result, states like Idaho and Montana—places with important wolf habitats—have passed devastating legislation aimed at drastically reducing wolf populations in those states.
Under the new law in Idaho, up to 90% of Idaho's wolves could be wiped out by trophy hunters, trappers, and even private contractors and under new laws in Montana, more than 85% of the state’s wolves could be slaughtered. What's worse is these new laws are not based on science, but a weak argument that they want to bring down the number of wolves in their states out of some misguided fear for livestock. In reality, this no-holds-barred slaughter could end up wiping wolves out of the states forever.
We need your help to send a message to USFWS and the Department of the Interior to stand up for wolves and reinstate their federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. We must act now before the states are allowed to wipe out their populations of gray wolves forever under the guise of management.
Please use the form to send a message to Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland asking for USFWS to reinstate federal ESA protections for gray wolves.
