Yes! I want to make a special gift to help The Humane Society of the United States save threatened desert tortoises.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s (FWS) Desert Tortoise Conservation Center (DTCC) houses threatened desert tortoises saved from paths of development. The DTCC is funded by the fees Nevada housing developers must pay the Bureau of Land Management when they disturb critical tortoise habitat. Unfortunately, when the economy crashed, so did the funds that once sustained the center. Consequently, the center is closing its doors in late 2014 and new plans must be made for many of its 1400 resident desert tortoises.
While the FWS plans to release the healthy tortoises under their care into the wild, the future of the tortoises deemed unhealthy is still up in the air. The HSUS's Wildlife Innovations and Response Team has offered the DTCC assistance in addressing the short term placement and long term facility issues they’re facing -- and we need your help.
Please make a donation today to assist our efforts to help relocate and plan for the future of these desert tortoises. With your donation, we’ll send you updates and action alerts so you can take quick, simple actions for animals each week. Plus, with a donation of $25 or more you’ll receive a free subscription to our award-winning, bi-monthly All Animals magazine with animal care tips, news from The HSUS, and investigative reports from the animal protection field.
Thank you for your support!
