Randolph County, AR rescue
UPDATED: February 19, 2015, 4:24 PM ET
On February 19, 2015, The Humane Society of the United States helped rescue 46 dogs and 11 other animals from a suspected puppy mill in Randolph County, Arkansas.
Upon serving a search warrant on the property, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office discovered the animals living in appalling conditions, with most lacking adequate access to clean water or food. Some were very underweight and extremely matted, and others required immediate medical care. Outside, rescuers found numerous dogs lacking any protection from the freezing elements — some dogs literally had icicles hanging off of them.
The HSUS Animal Rescue Team has removed all of the animals from the property pending the final disposition of this case. The animals will be thoroughly examined by veterinarians and will receive necessary medical treatment at The Humane Society of Saline County.
The property owner, who was previously convicted of animal cruelty in 2013, was selling the animals in person and online through various websites. Arkansas is one of the most problematic puppy mill states in the country, with no laws protecting dogs sold directly to the public or online currently on the books. Legislation slated to be introduced by Rep. Sorvillo would require any breeder with 10 or more dogs to be licensed with their county and allow regular inspections.
